So this morning I get off my bus and this is what I see
This is what happened.
- There was an electrical fire in a restaraunt called the V Garden.
- The V Garden is on the ground floor and the floors above it are apartments. The apartments are called ” The Downtowner” I think that back in the day it was called the Richmond Hotel, but I’m not sure.
- To give you a feel for the place, The Downtowner Apartments have this sign in the doorway about not brining weapons into the building and one of the residents told me the elevators don’t work, ‘ most of the time ‘. It’s not exactly prime real estate- if you get my drift.
- Still it’s home to a lot of people and a few told me that smoke from the fire below was so thick that it was hard to see when they started to walk down the stairs to the street- one resident told me she used the exterior fire escape. I’m not sure how the older resident I saw ( someone had found him a chair and he was sitting on it with a cane between his knees ) got out to the street and I was going to ask but someone mentioned something about ‘no fire doors’ and I said, “well there are fire exits right? “
- I looked up at all of those windows.
- And then I realized –
- so were the people standing around me.
