Beware The Flying Fetuses

Today it was announced that Matt Smith, 26 will be taking over the role of

The Doctor in 2010.

So upon hearing that news the first thought I had was ( okay, it’s sort of borrowed from a line in Ab-Fab )

” Next thing you know,  they’ll be chucking Fetuses around the TARDIS.”

I don’t know much about Smith, I don’t know if older fans will want to watch a show which will now have to cast actors as companions who are probably more familiar to the 11-19 age group then those fans who are old enough to have mortgages

but I do know that the Doctor Who Production team has it’s work cut out for them and as a Fan of the show for over 20 years, I wish them well.

  1. There’s a lot to Ewww about I s’pose.

One of my friends told me to keep in mind Doctor Who is a kids show and to not take it too seriously. I pointed out it hasn’t been that since the episode where Doctor Who got a smooch from Captain Jack. Oh. Plus he boinks his companions.

    Yep.

Times have changed for the Doc.

  2. Did you say “fetus”?

Spanky is going to have a fit. She’s always saying that. Like when she’s hungry she says, “Fetus, fetus,” to the tune of Micheal Jackson’s “Beat It.”

  3. Hi Kitty

Tell Spanky thanks for that, I’m going to make Fetus my word of the day Monday. I do that for real, I pick a word and make sure I use it three times.

This should be good, maybe I should record it.

  4. We need to start a campaign to get more companions like Donna! Somebody who can sass right back at the Doctor and doesn’t act like a love-sick puppy around the Doctor.
I liked Rose and Martha, but the adolescent stuff needs to go. Capt Jack doesn’t bother me & I basically like a more modern Who. I liked the Dr’s relationship/romance with Madame Pompadour in The Girl in the Fireplace. The chemistry (between the actors) was off though, in my opinion, in Human Nature/Family of Blood. But it was a nice try. I just don’t want the program warped into “romances between the Dr & his companions”.
    Okay, that’s my two-cents worth!

  5. I agree D. Donna was the best of the lot- she reminded me of Tegan and I think it shows that Catherine Tate is a great actress because she really brought Donna to life.

Having a more mature character- like Donna- also showed the more flawed side of the Dr’s nature- which gets lost when you’re dealing with characters who are gonna ” love him no matter what ”

So at some point I hope they do bring Donna back, just so we can watch what she does when she sees the new Doctor smells faintly of Clearasil- or whatever zit meds they use out in space. In fact, I would consider that worth campaigning for.

  6. Hmm. Doctor Who is an immortal time lord who has been around for centuries, I am wondering how they think they are going to sell that with a twelve year old, oh, sorry, twenty-six year old hero guy. Hmm.

  7. I’m curious enough to watch and find out, because if they don’t keep selling that line I think there could be trouble. Wanting to pull in new viewers is one thing, alienating ( no pun intended ) the fan base? that’s asking for trouble.

  8. Dr Teen Idol and a Tess of the Bloody Durbervilles sidekick ( so long since I read it can’t remember how to spell) I do not want. This is not good. I want Alien boy to be someone to lust after, not mother, and a sidekick i can cheer for not plot to murder. What was wrong with Hamish McWho????

  9. From what I hear on the radio here re the new lad – it seems he might be more apt than it appears…….also, I have a sneaking suspicion he has a particular prediliction for duct tape!

  10. Hey, at our house we have an inflatable dalek, a sonic screwdriver, other random stuff and all kinds of Dr. Who phrases that just kind of float around and land in normal conversation. It’s been that way for so long, I can hardly remember life any other way, except that when I was in college and hadn’t yet met my British-born husband Alec, the only time you could watch Dr. Who was at three in the morning on Friday nights. I guess the dorm TVs didn’t have VCR’s back then (or Tivo or anything else), so we had our geeky little cult of Dr. Who fanatics. We had to be fanatics, to stay up for a 3am show!

Anyway, now my 16 year old daughter Emily has become a bigger fan than me and I’m sure she’ll be happy to ogle over Matt Smith for a while. In fact, maybe there’s a ploy here to suck in new life, replacing the aging (much older than us!!) geeky 3am-ers with fresh blood. It started with dreamy David Tennant, and continues with Matt. Caught in a Teen Dream, Teen Dream, oooh oooh oooh Oh Yeah!

By the way Anita, your “word of the day” thing reminds me of PeeWee’s playhouse. Remember? I loved that show. It was on in the 80’s and I was too old for it, but I loved it. Not just for fetuses. AAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! 😉
