Social Media- Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, go ahead, chose a site any site and it’s safe to say it’s a Waste Land.
The ” food for thought ” is bad, the service is bad, and the cost of using it may not be in dollars and cents but it will cost you big all the same.
These Social Media site aren’t really about communication. It’s not the new ” town square” where we all show up and debate our ideas and share our opinions.
Social Media sites are like those seedy bars with sticky bathroom floors where a bunch of drunk people sit around at tables or stand in a corner in front of a dart board with no darts roaring into each other’s faces about the world under fly speckled lighting fixtures until one of them passes out or someone gets punched in the face and the cops show up and send everyone home.
I’ve been encouraging my friends to use blogs- you can get one free through Google ( used to be Blogger.Com if you’ve been out of the loop for awhile ) but I’m partial to WordPress.
I pay through the effing nose for my other blog, Enduring Bones because I want the option to use the old blogging format and I want the extra storage space for photos and pictures.
Ok. Time to get back on track:
The thing is, that much like Tik Tok or Youtube ( where anyone with a phone can be a star ) Facebook and Twitter is that they make you feel like you’re a writer, a Spin Doctor, that everyone is paying attention to your quips and that those likes and hearts validate your points of view, that what you said is true.
This is what I learned about Facebook.
It’s a purely transactional thing.
People like your stuff and in turn you’re supposed to go to their wall and like them back.
The darker side is, I’ve seen some of my friends FB pages and Tweets and their doctored selfies and not only they do they not talk to people like that in ‘real life’ they don’t even look like their pictures.
It’s like reality doesn’t matter- in fact in matters so little it can be bent and changed with a flick of your finger.
On January 20th reality as we know it won’t exist anymore- not even on social media.
I suppose all I can do is write about it.
On my blog.
